The author of 2014 legislation that expanded gun rights in Georgia is back this year with another effort to legalize firearms on college campuses. State Rep. Rick Jasperse, R-Jasper, and state Rep. Mandi Ballinger, R-Canton, have filed House Bill 859, which would allow anyone 21 or older with a weapons license to carry a gun anywhere on a public college or university campus, except for dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and at athletic events. …The House voted in 2014 to legalize campus carry, but the Senate stripped that language from the final version of Jasperse’s bill that became known as the “Guns Everywhere Bill.” The legislation signed into law that year allowed weapons to be carried into many government buildings, bars and restaurants, athletic events and more, while the powerful University System of Georgia successfully fought to keep guns off college campuses. Charlie Sutlive, the vice chancellor for the Board of Regents, which oversees the University System, was succinct when asked for a reaction to the latest effort to allow weapons on campus. “We support current state law,” Sutlive said.

Gun dealers would have to provide a gun lock with every purchase of a firearm and Georgians judged mentally ill would have to get sign-off from a health professional before having their rights restored, under gun control measures proposed Thursday by state Sen. Elena Parent, D-Atlanta. The bills are the latest by Democrats trying to wrest attention from gun advocates at the Georgia Legislature, who just Wednesday saw the author of 2014 legislation that expanded gun rights in Georgia propose another effort to legalize firearms on college campuses. The effort is backed by top Republican leaders in the state House, where Reps. Rick Jasperse, R-Jasper, and Mandi Ballinger, R-Canton, filed House Bill 859 to make it legal for any age 21 or older with a state weapons license to carry guns onto public college and university campuses.

Despite sending residents of student housing an e-mail threatening to make them pay to replace a pair of stolen video gaming consoles, a Dalton State College official says students won’t have to fork over money to replace the missing items. …After quoting the provisions of the contract, Bates continued, “While we have no desire to community bill everyone, this is now a community issue and as a community we must take responsibility which is why we are diligently trying to recover the stolen items by gathering more information. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of community billing should they not be recovered.” …Bates said the decision has been made not to bill the students based on information that students have provided since the thefts which she says point to someone outside of the student housing population. While the consoles haven’t been returned and no one has been arrested for the thefts, Bates said the students won’t be held responsible.

Love is in the air at Dalton State College’s Turtle Assurance Colony, where parents of the first endangered turtles to hatch at the college have been at it again. The female Home’s Hingeback Tortoise Kinixys homeana laid five eggs recently. Chris Manis, part-time instructor in natural sciences and research associate who oversees the colony, says there’s no way to tell if each egg will hatch a turtle, but he’s hopeful. The exterior of the eggs look healthy. …Dalton State is a member of the Turtle Survival Alliance, a conservation group formed in response to the disappearance of turtles in Asia where they are sought for food. Members of the alliance try to encourage breeding of endangered turtle species from different regions around the world. The college’s colony is approaching its first anniversary.

Where’s the Evidence?
NYU asks Common Application if it can demonstrate the value of asking applicants about their criminal or disciplinary records. If there is no proof, does that change the debate?

The pendulum swings quite a bit on the issue of asking applicants to colleges about their disciplinary records and criminal backgrounds. A decade ago, the Common Application added such questions at a time when many colleges were being criticized (and, in some cases, sued) for admitting students whose past records might suggest that they pose a danger to other students. But in the last few years, groups that advocate for criminal justice reform and those that have noted patterns of police and school discrimination against young minority males have asked whether such questions inevitably lead to the rejection of many of those who check the boxes — perhaps unfairly.
