Is Common Core failing the test?
By STEPHANIE SIMON | 7/23/13 3:23 PM EDT
President Barack Obama’s goal of holding all students across the U.S. to the same high academic standards may be on the verge of unraveling as states take a hard look at the more rigorous tests under development — and balk. Backed by $360 million in federal grants, some 40-plus states have spent the past three years working with testing companies to develop math and language arts exams tied to the academic standards known as Common Core.

The Answer Sheet by Valerie Strauss
Why the student loan compromise compromises students
The problem with the compromise that the Obama administration and the Republicans struck over student loan rates is that it compromises students. The deal, which the Senate passed late Wednesday, would bring down student loan rates, which were 3.4 percent until they doubled on July 1 to 6.8 percent because Congress failed to meet a deadline to act on the issue. But it also will link student loan rates to financial markets, which means that students could face much higher rates in years to come.

While myriad challenges face higher education these days – from pressure on finances to innovations in educational technology to questions about shared governance – only one group in the academy is charged with addressing all of them: the governing board. But in the past few years, boards seem to have been more likely to make headlines for addressing these challenges poorly rather than well.

Different Kind of Ranking?
By Elizabeth Redden
The common criticisms of global university rankings are well-known. In emphasizing publications and citations, they are relevant for only the most elite research universities – the “top 200” or 500 worldwide. They fail to adequately evaluate or account for the diverse activities of any single institution, not least teaching.
