University of Georgia provost Jere Morehead named sole finalist for school president
By PHILLIP LUCAS Associated Press
ATLANTA — The University of Georgia has named one of its longtime administrators as the sole finalist to be the school’s president, state officials said Monday. The Georgia Board of Regents will make the final decision on whether to hire Jere Morehead, who is a provost and the school’s vice president for academic affairs. Officials must wait a minimum of five days before meeting to discuss a final decision and it is unclear when the next board meeting will be held, Board of Regents spokesman John Millsaps said.

Researchers Teach Robots Deception by Mimicking Squirrels
Elizabeth Montalbano, Contributing Writer
Squirrels aren’t exactly the first thing that come to mind when you think of withholding the truth, but researchers have used the bushy-tailed creatures to teach robots to do exactly that. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology at the behest of the Office of Naval Research have developed technology that can allow robots to deceive each other, much in the same way squirrels do when trying to protect their hidden acorns.

High-flying bacteria spark interest in possible climate effects
Microbes found at extreme altitudes could influence precipitation and cloud density.
Helen Shen
Ravaged by arid winds and ultraviolet rays, some bacteria not only survive in the upper atmosphere but might affect weather and climate, according to a study published on 28 January in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. In one of the first attempts to explore atmospheric microbiology at high altitude, researchers analysed air samples from a six-week hurricane-research mission by NASA in 2010. A total of 314 different types of bacteria were collected in air masses around 10 kilometres above the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, and the continental United States. Although the scientists trapped only a small amount of material, bacteria accounted for around 20% of all particles — biological and non-biological — a higher proportion than in the near-Earth atmosphere. … “One of the next challenges is to figure out the role of these organisms,” says Konstantinos Konstantinidis, an environmental microbiologist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and one of the study’s authors.
