Leadership Institute Certificate Program

Facilitator: A national presenter, Christina Christenson Brush earned her doctorate in Industrial Relations/Human Resource Management and International Business at Georgia State University. Tina has over 30 years of consulting and training experience and has worked with organizations of all sizes in the profit, non-profit and public sectors in the Midwest and Southeast as well as overseas. Tina works with organizations to develop integrated management development programs, engagement initiatives, human performance improvement systems, and high performance teams.


Module 1: Self Leadership – Managing Your Time, Stress, and Emotions. Great leaders start with leading themselves. You are a model for others, so make it a good one. You will learn how to:

  • Distinguish between reactive and proactive thinking and behavior – and how to be proactive
  • Identify your priorities and focus your energy in areas that contribute to your success
  • Assess your typical response to setbacks and learn how to build resilience in yourself and others
  • Tame “dinosaur” thinking under stress.

Module 2: Harnessing the Power of Diversity. Our workforce has never been more diverse. Generational, cultural, and personal differences often collide, but can be turned into opportunities and a competitive advantage for your organization. You will learn how to:

  • Turn the diversity of your team into a competitive advantage
  • Lead to include rather than exclude
  • Understand the impact your personality has on others
  • Understand what drives behavior – and how you can use this knowledge to get peak performance from all team members.

Module 3: Effective Face-to-Face Communication. Great leaders are great communicators. All leadership behaviors depend on quality communication. People take jobs based on organization characteristics. When they quit, they leave bad bosses and, the reasons for leaving are more often than not linked to poor communication. You will learn to:

  • Value understanding instead of being understood
  • Become more aware of the potential barriers that distort your intended messages
  • Identify your natural, go-to communication style and understand the benefits of other styles of communicating your messages
  • Encourage open and honest dialogue dealing with almost any issue with your team members.

Module 4: Creating Trust and Accountability. Trust is at an all-time low in most organizations. Without trust, leaders cannot respond to the volatile changes their organizations face. Without trust, you cannot create accountability – and without trust and accountability, high performance results will not be achieved. You will learn how to:

  • Develop a firm foundation for interpersonal interactions at work – the Trust Triangle: Rapport, Credibility, and Respect
  • Identify and understand social threats in the workplace to minimize “dinosaur” thinking and behavior that creates distrust and lack of accountability
  • Influence and motivate others to achieve high performance while breaking down accountability roadblocks
  • Promote accountability by eradicating blaming and excuse-making behaviors.

Module 5: Finding Ways Forward: Problem Solving and Decision Making. Most of the time spent at work is focused on finding ways around obstacles and barriers to performance. To make effective decisions, you must have access to and utilize all available knowledge and experience to address the real issues and take appropriate action. You will learn to:

  • Build employees’ “problem-solving muscle”
  • Encourage a climate of continuous improvement among all team members
  • Encourage participation of all team members so valued contributions are not missed
  • Utilize the Six Thinking Hats approach to problem solving and decision making.

Module 6: Dealing with Performance Challenges. Leaders typically focus on performance results and not the behaviors leading to the results. This makes it difficult to know how to turn problem employees into successful contributors. You will learn to:

  • Respond to typical challenging behaviors and attitudes by targeting the underlying causes of these behaviors
  • Identify performance gaps, their causes, and obstacles to achieving desired performance results
  • Use a proven, four-step method to train on-the-job that ensures learning is retained and applied consistently on the job
  • Utilize the “inside-out” method of coaching to develop employees
  • Provide useful feedback and support to encourage continued employee progress.

Module 7: Dealing with Conflict and Change. Change is the only constant in today’s environment and with change comes tension and conflict. Great leaders know change is difficult and they know how to help others navigate through the uncertainties and insecurities change brings to the workplace. You will learn:

  • Strategies for helping individuals move through the change process
  • Minimize the potentially destructive individual and organizational outcomes caused by poorly managed change
  • How to proactively manage conflict situations
  • Different ways to resolve conflict and the impact of your preferred conflict management style.
